The Flip Side by James Bailey

On New Year's Eve Josh has planned a very romantic proposal in an exclusive pod on the London Eye with champagne, chocolates and a ring.  Within the first couple of minutes of the half hour journey he has popped the question.  Unfortunately the answer is no and they have to spend a very long and uncomfortable journey together until the pod comes back down to the ground.

As his girlfriend is both a colleague and the daughter of the owner of the hotel where they work, and they also live in a flat owned by her father, he has managed to lose his girlfriend, job and home all in one go.  He has to move back to live with his parents.

For the whole of the year, for every decision that he needs to make, Josh will flip a coin.  The coin will tell him which way to go and he will follow.

U is for Undertow by Sue Grafton

Private Investigator Kinsey Millhone is requested by Michael Sutton to investigate something he remembers seeing 20 years ago.  When he was 6 years old he saw two men digging a hole and they had a wrapped up bundle on the ground near to them.  The memory has been triggered by reading a recent newspaper article about some famous kidnapping stories which included the kidnapping and disappearance of Mary Claire Fitzhugh in 1967.  Even though the requested ransom money was paid Mary Claire was never seen again.

Kinsey agrees to help out for at least a day and by tracking back over all the information Michael remembers she takes them to Horton Ravine to try to find some familiar ground.  They find the exact spot and the police are brought in to excavate the area.  What they find and dig up starts a whole new investigation for Kinsey.

R is for Ricochet by Sue Grafton

Kinsey Millhone is hired by Nord Lafferty to collect his daughter Reba from prison and to drive her home.  She then has to keep an eye on her, keep her out of trouble and make sure she sees her Parole Officer.  The job should only take a few days.

Kinsey soon realises that Reba has taken the fall for her ex-boss and ex-lover Beck.

The FBI are watching Beck and trying to get evidence against him as they believe he is laundering money for a drug cartel.  They want Kinsey to convince Reba that she should help them to get the evidence they need.  At first Reba is not keen, then she sees it as a way of getting even.
