The Watchmaker's Daughter (Glass and Steele Book 1) by C J Archer
After India Steele’s father dies and her fiancé leaves her, whilst keeping her father”s inheritance for himself, she is left homeless, without money and is unable to find work. She has been refused membership of the watchmakers guild, as she is female, and so is unable to work on her own and none of the local watchmakers will employ her. They all seem to be afraid of her. The only employment she can find is working for the American Matthew Glass, helping him search for a London watchmaker who is believed to be the only person who can mend the mysterious and magical watch he has which seems to help keep him in good health when he becomes very tired.
