At Christmas time last year Maisie Samson worked in a busy pub on the mainland, she was in a relationship with the owner of the business and expecting his baby. This year she is back on the island of Gull helping her parents to run their struggling pub, The Driftwood Inn. She is single and there is no baby.
Hugo Scorrier runs a successful holiday business on Petroc, the nearest island, and he is trying to buy up local businesses so that he can develop the area to extend his holiday village. Maisie is determined that she will make a success of The Driftwood Inn and allow her parents to take semi-retirement. She needs help in the bar and so employs Patrick McKinnon who is backpacking from Australia and has decided to stay for a few months.
Maisie is attracted to Patrick but knows that a relationship can't work as he will be leaving the island to return to Australia in six months time.
