Auntie Poldi has decided to move to Sicily to have a sea view whilst she drinks all day and waits to die. She has family in Sicily who keep an eye on her and discourage her drinking.
A young man, Valentino, has been helping to do jobs for Poldi in her new home and then one day he fails to turn up. Poldi makes enquiries about where he is and no-one has seen him. After four days Poldi discovers his body on the beach, he has obviously been murdered. She calls both the Carabinieri and the state police. Both turn up and both suspect Poldi of being involved.
Commissario Montana is put in charge of the murder case. On the beach Poldi had promised the dead Valentino that she would find out who had murdered him and even though she is told by Montana to keep away from the case, she ignores him and makes her own enquiries. She uncovers some dodgy dealings with items being stolen from old houses and sold on. She makes a few new friends in the local community but most of their names end up on her list of possible murderers.
Poldi ropes in her family to help her and to take it in turns to stake out the area looking for the unknown dark haired man who turned up at the funeral.
