Following the sudden death of her mother, Rosie Merchant returns to Devon from her home in Spain. She moves into Driftwood House where she grew up. Rosie is expecting to sort out the house, arrange for it to be rented out and then return to her life in Spain. Growing up she couldn't wait to be able to get away from Heaven's Cove where everyone knew everything about each other.
The arrival of a letter shows that Rosie's mother Sofia had not always told her everything and some things which were assumed, like ownership of Driftwood House, were not true.
Liam Satterley, who she remembers from school, is now running his family farm. Liam agrees to help Rosie make some improvements to Driftwood House in the hope that they can save it from being knocked down and developed.
