Essy Havers runs a business in Tennessee which tracks down all sorts of odd bits and pieces that her clients want to find. When tasked with collecting sand and memorabilia from Cornwall she heads to Herring Bay to visit her Aunt Molly. She also wants to find out why her mum left the village many years ago and won't return.
She is immediately recognised in Herring Bay as being the daughter of Paula but people are not willing to talk about what happened when Paula left.
Essy meets Ruan who is decorating Aunt Molly's kitchen. He has recently returned to Herring Bay whilst having a break from his usual career as an architect in London. Ruan's mum Vera takes an instant dislike to Essy. Something has obviously happened in the past between the 2 families and Essy is determined to find out what that was.
