The story is based on the true events of George Mallory attempting to climb Mount Everest.
George falls in love with Ruth, but he also loves climbing, and he is given the opportunity, along with a small group of other experienced climbers, to attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest. The group would be the first ever to climb that high. If he reaches the summit George plans to leave a photograph of his wife at the top of the world.
There are some tensions within the group, particularly with George Finch who believes they will need oxygen to be able to climb up to the very highest peak.
