This story goes backwards and forwards between Bessie's 16th birthday in August 1984 and her 53rd birthday in August 2021.
On the day of her 16th birthday Bessie has to collect her exam results. She expects to do ok but is shocked when the results are received. Later when she attends a school party she finds out some information that changes the course of her life.
Now at aged 53, married and with a grown-up family, Bessie is looking back at her life and thinking about the hopes and dreams she had when she was young and the secrets she has kept for all that time.
