Escape to Riverside Cottage by Sheila Norton

Following the unexpected death of her soon to be ex-husband Clare discovers that she has inherited both a small fortune and a small dog.  She sets off on her travels around Britain but when she arrives at Little Sorrell, a small out of the way and hard to find village in Devon, she falls in love with the place.  The village she loves, the villagers are not so friendly.

The only person who is at all friendly and welcoming is the vicar.  Everyone else is quite rude.  They actively discourage visitors and tourists.

Through her dog Sid, Clare meets a young boy who is being excluded from playing with the other children.  She allows him to walk the dog for her and they start to become friends.  Clare slowly learns why the villagers are all so unfriendly but is determined that as she loves the village she wants to stay and is able to rent a small cottage for a couple of months.  The vicar then ropes her into helping him with his choir.
