This is a follow-on story to The Island.
The leper colony on the island of Spinalonga is being closed as a cure to leprosy has been found. The inhabitants of the island are all being brought back over to the mainland.
Maria is coming back to live with her family, but on the day of her return her sister Anna is murdered by husband Andreas. Maria and her husband Nikos, the doctor who helped to create the cure, take on responsibility for Anna's daughter Sofia.
Andreas is convicted of the murder and sent to prison for life. None of his family visit him. Maria feels that she needs to see him and so starts to visit regularly.
